A Custom Shoemaker in New York City

I absolutely love when I discover a craftsman or artisan in the course of walking around town. Not long ago, I was in New York’s Chinatown. When I turned onto Howard Street I was amazed to stumble upon E.Vogel, a little shop turning out hand-made shoes. This place looked like something from another era, and I thought to myself, “how cool!”

Then I saw an article in Bloomberg Businessweek recently that said E. Vogel has been doing this since 1879! They’ve outfitted the likes of Paul Newman, Henry Kissinger and the U.S. Equestrian team.

Fourth-generation shoemaker Dean Vogel told the magazine “The highlights are manifold, but at the top is being able to create beautiful, functional footwear that delights the customer.”
